Well, here it is; here I am. Here’s everything I’ve ever written that I’ve deemed sufficiently good, sufficiently original, sufficiently worthy of anyone else’s, or ideally everyone else’s attention. Attention! Speaking of it: of course I desire, more than almost anything, to be noticed, to be regarded, to be, in some way or in every way, anointed as special, but of course I’m also animated by a seemingly much more potent impulse to slip through life as close to undetected as possible; to be as much of a non-entity as possible; to be mostly left alone. My words on the page say: Look at me! Regard me! Anoint me as special and good and original and worthy of attention! But my actions in the world say: Look away! Fuck off! Leave me to my private little cogitations here on the margins of things, observing and analysing and pathologising the great dance of humanity from a necessary but also fatal remove! But still: in spite of my very best attempts to hide and shrink otherwise exempt myself from the mess of life, there’s something within or perhaps about me that courts and needs and thrives on attention. Something within or about me that feels  Attention! I want it! I need it! Give it to me! Affirm to me, over and over again and in every possible way that I’m good! That I’m worthy!! That I’m special!!! That baby, I’m a star!!!!
